Over the past few days I have been reading through Hurt 2.0 by Chap Clark. I continually find myself mesmerized by some incredible insights into the mind and life of adolescents. Clark takes an in-depth look into what teenagers aren’t saying, but what deep down they are trying to communicate.

Ultimately, the first few chapters of Hurt 2.0 point to the greatest need adolescents have, adults! With the landscape of family constantly changing in our culture teens are finding themselves less concerned in the minds of parents. They have also felt uninvited to participate in society and pushed to the side like a kids table at Thanksgiving. “Out of sight, out of mind” is something that is often joked about, but in actuality it’s the feeling most teens are gathering from society.

So what’s the point? Teenagers are in need! Parents, they need you to do more than drop them off at school and cook them meals. Adults, they need us for more than an occasional handshake and smile. They need your time, your willingness to listen and understand, your wisdom, and your love. Pour into students! I know about 30 that would love some time with you! Seriously!

Tommy Nelson wrote about this same thing in the context of David and Absolam. Absolam was willing to burn down a field just to get David’s (his dad) attention. Good word.

I approve this message! I have read both Hurt and Hurt 2.0, as well as a few others of Clark’s books. I’m so glad to know a youth pastor has read it! I have been a big proponent of Clark and have spent time studying the issues he brings up and he is exactly right, a teenager’s greatest need is a loving, devoted adult.
